Evolution of pirates

gergana krasteva

Lets play a game. I will describe a personality that changed the world with its appearance and you will try to guess it? Ok? Ok.

Well, this people were the sea warriors, they chased booty like anyone else, they drank rum and whiskey as they were immortal and they smelled really bad... oh, and the most important – they Aarrrrrrrr!

I hope there were some right answers but for those of you who are still wondering who are these amazing people – I was describing a real truly pirate.

Nearly I saw some movies as “Treasure island”, “Captain Blood”, ”Peter Pan” and “Pirates of Caribbean” and in my mind just jumped the idea of finding out how the whole piracy started.

Apparently, there are more legends about the piracy than real pirates but for sure the sources are confident about the existing for the first one - Pontius Pirate who lived in the first century. It is not enough that he was unchallenged for many years and his adventures still scare the bravest warriors but he formalized the original Pirate’s Priority which includes a lots of whiskey and booty and hating everyone who is not a pirate. The changes were major. Before those codes people had just called them jerks because of their raping and stealing habits. Another Pontius Pirate’s contribution was the grog. Based on an old family recipe the drink became popular quickly. But the most important creation was the famous letter “R” which changed with the evolution into “Aarrrr” or sometimes “Arrrrgh”.

The piracy as a business became really popular. But the French were first. When they arrived into the New World some of them decided to become pirates because it was easier than being farmers. They started attacking Spain from two sides and eventually the French pirates stole their ships. After that the piracy became bigger than ever. Most of the European countries had their famous pirates. England and France were worried about Spain and the piracy was a perfect strategy to help.

Because of the absence of international low the piracy formalized as a way for settling deals. The piracy became a global business. Even some of the pirates were called “gentlemans”. But with the time more and more criminals became part of the business. The situation was out of control and eventually the gentleman piracy ruined.

The piracy disappeared by the 20th century. But a hundred years later a new pirates much different than the old ones came – piracy of the Somali coast. In nowadays they are still one of the biggest treats to the international shipping.

So with that research I can say that the piracy is not dead. There are still people who live their lives as a pirates and they make their living in that way. But yes you won’t see a pirate as the ones in the past but every real pirate still screams “Aaarrrrrrr!”.
